The San Luis Valley

open roadAlamosa, home of La Puente, is located at 7,500 feet at the

center of the San Luis Valley, the world’s largest alpine valley.

The Valley is larger than the state of Connecticut, and it is home to thirty-five communities within the boundaries of Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties.

The Valley covers an area of 8,193 square miles and has a population of roughly 46, 000. About 18% of the Valley’s residents live below the poverty line compared to the state average of 12.5% and in 2008. 31.8% of children living in the Valley live in poverty compared to the state average of 17%.

The median household income is $37, 424,  compared to

$57,685 for Colorado as a whole.

The largest industry in the San Luis Valley is agriculture, leaving the economy reliant on a bountiful but short growing season. While the annual yields of potatoes, lettuce, and alfalfa are often high, the seasonal nature of the work means that many individuals struggle to make ends meet outside of the 90 day growing season.  This economic up and down puts many Valley residents into a cycle of need wherein the choice between paying a utility bill and buying food is a common one. Additionally, each year a large number of migrant farm workers from across the U.S. and Latin America come to work the harvest. Without any stable, adequate migrant housing in the San Luis Valley many of those hard working individuals become part of the La Puente community for the two months that make up the harvest time.

The cycle of poverty and struggle caused by a lack of affordable housing, underemployment, and a lack of care for the mentally ill, veterans, and others with special needs creates a deep need for services and support here in the San Luis Valley. La Puente endeavors to meet those needs and to empower people to live independently, with dignity.
